Boulder Opera is thrilled to welcome back Madeleine Snow, who returns to direct The Elixir of Love after delighting audiences with her magical staging of The Magic Flute in 2024.

Madeleine is a director and creative collaborator passionate about reimagining ways for contemporary audiences to engage with classical music. She has enjoyed directing site-specific performances and collaborating with living composers such as Ricky Ian Gordon and Ben Moore, and she directed the world premiere of Joshua Hershfield’s critically acclaimed rock musical Rise. A 2024–26 Studio Artist in the Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio, she has recently worked on productions with PAC NYC, Palm Beach Opera, Opera Colorado, Central City Opera, Boulder Opera, Loveland Opera Theatre, Eastman Opera Theatre, and more.

We caught up with Madeleine to talk about what makes Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love such a joy to bring to life — and why it’s the perfect opera for families and first-time audiences alike.

What made you fall in love with The Elixir of Love, and what are you most excited for audiences to see this November?

The Elixir of Love is actually the first opera I ever saw! I was instantly mesmerized by its comedic brilliance, charming romance, and beautiful bel canto score. That sense of wonder has stayed with me throughout my opera career, and I'm so excited for audiences to experience this gorgeous music, spectacular singing, and timeless tale about how love has a way of surprising us.

This opera is full of comedy, romance, and a little “magic potion” mischief — how do you bring that fun energy to the stage?

The fun of this opera really begins with its characters, all of whom are bold and full of life. Adina is intelligent and independent; Nemorino wears his heart on his sleeve as the hopeless romantic; Sergeant Belcore comes in with swagger and bravado; and Dr. Dulcamara brings all the flair of a traveling charlatan. In our fast-paced, hour-long version, we get to amplify these personalities, playing with strong choices, quick pacing, and heightened emotions to keep the energy vibrant and comedic.

For first-time opera-goers or kids seeing opera for the first time, what should they watch for or get excited about?

Get ready for big characters, big emotions, and lots of laughs! The Elixir of Love is a fantastic first opera because it’s full of fun surprises, and the music is incredibly expressive. There’s love, jealousy, a mysterious potion, and so much more. This show is fast, funny, and full of heart with something for everyone to enjoy.

Are there any behind-the-scenes surprises or playful moments in this production that audiences might not expect?

This opera lends itself to such a joyful rehearsal process. I love discovering new comedic moments and collaborating with singers who bring remarkable energy, charisma, and a true sense of playfulness. I'm excited to bring whimsical, lively touches through choreography, physical comedy, and some clever props, making each performance feel exciting and full of life.

If you could give the audience one “taste” of the joy of this opera in a single sentence, what would it be?

The Elixir of Love is a hilarious, heartfelt, and deeply human story, reminding us that true love isn't found through potions or clever schemes, but rather in the simple, brave act of being true to yourself.

Don’t miss Boulder Opera’s The Elixir of Love — a one-hour family-friendly opera full of laughter, romance, and Donizetti’s sparkling music.
