An interview with Boulder Opera’s Artistic Director, Dianela Acosta

Boulder Opera Company is known for making opera accessible, inclusive, and exciting for audiences of all ages. This winter, the company presents a fresh, family-friendly take on Donizetti’s beloved comic gem, The Elixir of Love — a heartwarming story filled with laughter, love, and dazzling bel canto singing.

We sat down with Artistic Director Dianela Acosta to talk about why this opera is the perfect introduction to the art form, what makes this production special, and how Boulder Opera continues to nurture the next generation of opera lovers.

1. What inspired you to bring Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love to Boulder audiences this season, and how does this production align with Boulder Opera’s mission to make opera accessible to all ages?

I wanted to explore one of the great classics of Italian opera and introduce the next generation of opera lovers to the beauty of bel canto singing — that pure, expressive vocal style that Donizetti mastered so well. The Elixir of Love is funny, romantic, and full of heart, which makes it ideal for audiences who are new to opera as well as long-time fans.

Our mission at Boulder Opera has always been to make opera accessible and engaging, and this piece allows us to do exactly that — it’s a timeless story with music that touches everyone.

2. This version of Elixir is presented in a shorter format. How did you approach adapting a classic opera for modern and family audiences while keeping its charm and humor intact?

We’ve created a one-hour, family-friendly version that captures all the best moments of the opera while keeping it accessible for families with younger children.

It’s fully staged with beautiful costumes and a live ensemble orchestra, so audiences still get the full operatic experience — just in a more approachable way. It’s the perfect first opera for kids or anyone who’s curious about the art form but might feel intimidated by traditional opera.

3. Boulder Opera has a strong reputation for community engagement and education. How will this production connect with local schools, families, and new opera-goers?

For this production, we’re doing something very special — we’ve invited teen singers to join the chorus. It’s such a joy to see young people experience the magic of opera from inside the production.

We also continue to connect with local schools through our outreach and field trip programs. Many families discover opera for the first time through Boulder Opera, and we love watching children’s faces light up as they hear this incredible music live.

4. Can you share a behind-the-scenes story about the cast, musicians, or creative process that makes this production special?

We’re incredibly proud to work with local Colorado talent, from our professional soloists to our orchestra musicians. Our conductor, Steven Aguilo-Arbues, brings wonderful energy to the music, and our stage team led by Madeleine Snow has been crafting a production that’s fun, colorful, and full of emotion.

Every rehearsal feels like a celebration of community — singers, musicians, and families all coming together to create something beautiful.

5. Why do you think The Elixir of Love is the perfect introduction to opera for families and first-time audiences?

Because it’s fun, emotional, and easy to follow! It has love, humor, and a happy ending — what more could you ask for?

My hope is that audiences leave the theater feeling inspired and curious to explore more opera. If The Elixir of Love can spark that curiosity in even one child or family, then we’ve done our job.
